Recently, Apple disclosed their new models of iPhone to the public which are the 8 and X. The iPhone 8 was issued following the iPhone 7 while the iPhone X (read as ten) was to celebrate their 10th year in the business. Since it’s the first time for Apple to unveil two models at once, you’re probably wondering what’s the difference between the iPhones. Aside from the price, there are many unique features that you can discover on both the iPhone 8 and X. So, it’s quite hard to choose what to purchase. If you want to know more about these two, scroll down for the comprehensive analysis.
What’s the Difference?
We might assume that because the iPhone 8 and X were released on the same day, they will have more similarities than differences. If we are going to take a closer look, we can notice that only a few are identical between the two. One example of this is their operating system. The 8 and X will both utilize the latest iOS (11). This means that the internals of the phones will look the same. Another commonality is their processor. Apple still used their A11 Bionic to ensure that both will exhibit excellent and smooth performance. Moreover, the two phones support wireless charging. Now, how about their differences?
How Do They Look Different?
Color
The biggest distinction of the iPhone X to 8 is its display. Let’s start by checking the screen. First off, both phones have the True Tone Technology that automatically regulates the brightness of your device depending on the environment. Furthermore, iPhone 8 and X set their maximum brightness to 625 cd/m2 which is typical for smartphones. The iPhone X, however, departs on 8 with its HDR and Dolby Vision. This additional element gives you more realistic color and authentic graphics when playing videos using your phone.
Screen Size
The two iPhones also differ in screen size. While the former has a 5.8-inch screen display, the latter has a 4.7-inch screen. In terms of aspect ratio, the iPhone 8 comes on the 16:9 standard whereas the iPhone X supports the 19:9. On the other side, the iPhone X is the first in the flagship that has a bezel-less screen. So, the next time you get your iPhone in your pocket, you will be seeing an all-screen device. Though iPhone X is bigger, we can’t still see if it’s good or not.
Screen Quality
There is no doubt that the iPhone X has more advantage when it comes to screen quality. Because of its screen size and style, the X is designed with OLED screen which the company called Super Retina Display. This provides vivid images and clear display on your devices. Meanwhile, the 8 has only Retina Display. The resolution which the phones can support is different too. iPhone X has 2436×1125 pixel resolution with 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio but the iPhone 8 has only 1334×750 pixel resolution with a 1400:1 contrast ratio.
How Do They Work Different?
The Home Button
The difference between iPhone X and iPhone 8 boils down not only on display but also on its operation. As mentioned in the first part, the iPhone X goes with the trendy edge-to-edge style. Thus, expect that you will not see any home button when you purchase the model. Abandoning the home button might become problematic for you have to find alternative ways to navigate through your phone. For the iPhone 8, Apple retained the home button and its functionality is still the same.
Face ID vs Touch ID
Over the years, iPhone comes with the Touch ID that allows its users to conveniently unlock and operate their phones. The iPhone 8 still uses this tech but seeing that there is no more home button on the iPhone X, Touch ID will be replaced by the Face ID. The Face ID scans your face and unlocks your phone once it verifies that you’re the owner. This said tech causes worry to users as they are not sure how reliable it is. With this, Apple stated that the Face ID is more secure than the Touch ID.
Camera
As for a camera, iPhone X has more advanced features than the 8. While they both have a 12-megapixel rear camera, the X has two cameras on the back. One camera has a wide-angle sensor with an aperture of f/1.8 and the other one has a telephoto sensor with an aperture of f/2.8. These two cameras are responsible for shooting portraits with a blurry background. In addition to that, it has dual OIS or optical image stabilization with an optical and digital zoom of up to 10x. The iPhone 8 has only one camera with a f/1.8 aperture, OIS, and a digital zoom of up to 5x. For the front camera, iPhone 8 has 7MP with Retina Flash that is similar to what the iPhone Plus offers. Likewise, iPhone X has a 7MP front camera with TruDepth tech and Portrait mode and lighting. This allows users to take the same portrait photos with Bokeh effect like the back camera. If you’re not a fan of optical zoom and Portrait Mode, then it won’t matter whether you buy the X or 8.
More Details
Capacity
In the attempt to provide its users more space on their device, Apple expands their storage. Now, you can purchase the X and 8 with 64/256GB. But as usual, neither of which supports microSD card. The RAM wasn’t revealed though it’s rumored that iPhone 8 has 2GB while the X has 3GB.
Battery life
Regarding the battery life, it is reported that the iPhone X will last longer than the 8. This is for the reason that the iPhone 8 still utilizes the same as iPhone 7. Meanwhile, the iPhone X upgrades its battery. Thus, it can withstand two hours longer.
Conclusion
It’s still difficult to judge who’s going to be the winner on the iPhone X vs iPhone 8 battle. Needless to say, the two models perform equally because they have the same processor. If you want a bigger phone with an edge-to-edge screen, you can purchase the iPhone X. Just keep in mind that there’s no more home button and Touch ID on this one. Plus, it’s quite expensive. But in case you’re satisfied with conventional iPhones, the 8 model is the choice for you. This is pretty similar to iPhone 7 except for the fact that it has a wireless charger and some improvements on-screen display.
